Electricity

Electricity for all of Routt County, with the exception of the town of Oak Creek, is provided by Yampa Valley Electric Association, a cooperative association headquartered in Steamboat Springs. The association's service area extends from the Continental Divide to within 25 miles of the Utah border, and from 10 miles north of the Wyoming state line to just north of Interstate 70. New residents can sign up for service by calling (970) 879-1160 or 1-888-873-9832, or by visiting the association's online site at http://www.yvea.com.

A deposit is typically not required of residential consumers, but commercial customers who have not established credit in their business need to provide a deposit covering three months of projected electric use.

The town of Oak Creek has its own electricity distribution system. The town taps into federal power lines at a substation north of town and then buys electricity directly from the Nebraska Municipal Power Pool and the Western Area Power Administration. To sign up for service, new residents should stop by town hall at 129 West Colfax or call (970) 736-2422. There is a $250 deposit.
